Description and Service Details
Description (Service) The primary role of the High School Liaison Officer is to maintain safety and investigate crime within the school setting. The Officers may conduct classes on personal safety and drug prevention and they may also be a liaison with the parent council committee.  
This program involves six police officers assigned full time to 22 high schools in the Region of Halton:  
* their mandate is education and problem solving 
* they are a resource for students, teachers, parents and other police officers 
* a primary goal is to alleviate the apathy that exists among young people towards the police 
* officers lecture on five topics in the schools: sexual assault/date rape * police and youth (career in policing) * drugs * violence * drinking and driving - RIDE 101 
* hate crime is incorporated in lectures 
* officers have the discretionary flexibility to interact with the student population as they see fit, whether it be games, field trips or other school activities 
* they take occurrence reports and deal with them appropriately 
* conflict resolution is an important facet of the officers' role in the high schools 
* school staff and parents are also exposed to talks about drugs, which include drug paraphernalia and drug use
