Description (Service) This listing gives an overview of laws related to celebrants for marriage services, and how to find officiants and civil wedding services 
Civil Ceremonies at Municipal Offices (Town and City Halls): 
Only some municipal offices perform civil marriage ceremonies * in the Halton area, these include Oakville (see here), Mississauga (see here) and Toronto (see here
* municipal offices in Burlington, Hamilton, Milton or Halton Hills do not perform civil marriage ceremonies, however they can issue marriage licences 
Types of Marriage: 
To ensure that your marriage is performed properly and legally, an authorized official needs to marry you * there are 2 types of marriage ceremonies performed in Ontario: 
1. Religious marriage: a recognized religious official marries you 
* the Government of Ontario posts a list of registered religious officials authorized to perform marriages in the province, see here 
2. Civil marriage: a judge, justice of the peace or authorized municipal clerk marries you, often at a local municipal office or city hall 
* many do not perform civil marriage ceremonies, do not contact an Ontario court to find a secular officiant 
* if you find a secular wedding officiant advertised, online, or in another directory, you should ensure they are licensed in Ontario by contacting the Office of the Registrar General (for contact information see separate listing here)  
* the Government of Ontario does not publish an online list of licensed secular officiants. 
Marriage Licences: 
Can be purchased from all city halls, town halls or municipal offices 
* for information on required documentation, see Government of Ontario website here, or contact local municipal offices 
* a marriage licence is valid for 90 days from the date it was issued
