Duties

If you enjoy speaking with the community, working outdoors, and helping out with a variety of tasks then this may be the perfect volunteer opportunity you’ve been looking for! 

We are looking for a small diverse team to accompany our team members providing information, resources and educational, hands-on activities at our Burlington Beach Eco Hub and other locations, primarily in late Spring, Summer, and early Fall.

This opportunity is suitable for adults of all ages, and for post-secondary and older high school students with communication skills, lots of energy, reliability, passion for the environment, responsibility and a willingness to learn. Formal related experience or education is not required.

If you are selected for this opportunity, we will ask you to commit to a schedule of weekday and/or weekend shifts for a two month period. Training will be provided.

Duties may include:

  • Set up and take down of outreach table/supplies and eco-activity materials

  • Being a friendly and helpful ambassador for BurlingtonGreen, providing awareness and eco-action information to members of the public

  • Leading and/or co-leading eco-actions with diverse community member of all ages

  • Referring questions to staff members or other volunteers as needed

  • Maintain confidentiality as needed

  • Other duties as needed

Commitment Length Medium Term (4 months to 1 year) - Volunteers will be asked to commit to a schedule of weekday and/or weekend shifts for an initial two month period. ; Long Term - Potential for May to October annual term with possible occasional outreach opportunities October - May
Interaction Level Solitary - Some time will be spent individually monitoring the outreach table while other team members are working on other activities or taking breaks onsite. ; One-on-one - Interact with fellow BG team members as well as individual community members ; Small Group - Interact with couples, families and small groups. Help with or co-lead eco actions for groups of up to 25 individuals.
Minimum Hours 4 / Week
Seasons Spring - 4-hour occasional or weekly shifts on weekends and holidays in May and June ; Summer - 4-hour shifts weekly on either a weekday or weekend/holiday in July and August ; Fall - 4-hour occasional or weekly shifts on weekends and holidays in September and October ; Winter - Possible very occasional Winter shifts, may be at other community locations.
Accessibility Partially Accessible - Building is not currently wheelchair accessible. ; Barrier-free washroom including door and stall ; Volunteer activities will be outside and inside our building, which currently requires exterior steps to access. Cost No cost. Volunteers need to know that paid parking is enforced during most volunteer shifts, with a limited number of free parking days available to Halton residents (confirmed for 2023) via online City of Burlington service. No reimbursement available for parking fees or parking tickets.

Additional Requirements Proficiency with written and conversational English.
