DescriptionA program at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, in affiliation with the University of Toronto, which provides evidence-based information and guidance about the safety or risk to the developing fetus or infant, of maternal exposure to drugs, chemicals, diseases, radiation and environmental agents. 
 
Motherisk counselling and research gives pregnant, planning, and breastfeeding women the opportunity for rational treatment in pregnancy and while breastfeeding, the means to make well-informed choices, and a healthy start for their unborn children.  
 
Motherisk offers three toll-free helplines which assist nearly 200 women daily. These are:
  • Alcohol and Substance Use Helpline - 1-877-327-4636 
    For information about the fetal effects of alcohol, nicotine and drugs like marijuana, cocaine and ecstasy. 
  • Nausea and Vomiting of Pregnancy Helpline - 1-800-436-8477 
    Provides information on "morning sickness" and how to treat it. 
  • HIV and HIV Treatment in Pregnancy - 1-888-246-5840 
    Provides information about the possible effects of HIV and HIV treatment during pregnancy. 
  • Motherisk's Home Line - 416-813-6780  
    Provides information about the risk or safety of prescription and over-the-counter drugs, herbal products, chemicals, x-rays, chronic disease and infections during pregnancy. [This is a toll call to our Toronto call centre. Callers may have to wait up to 10 minutes to speak to a counsellor.]
The Motherrisk Clinic - Each week 10 to 20 women come to the Motherisk Clinic in Toronto following exposure to known or suspected teratogens (substances that cause abnormalities in the developing fetus), new unfamiliar drugs, chronic drug therapy or drugs of abuse. Note: Clinic visits are BY APPOINTMENT ONLY.

Alcohol and Substance Use Helplines: Mon-Fri from 9 am-5 pm in each of Canada's time zones.
