| Description | Compassionate care benefits may be paid up to a maximum of 6 weeks to a person who has to be absent from work to provide care or support to a gravely ill family member at risk of dying within 26 weeks. Unemployed persons on EI can also ask for this type of benefit. Detailed information is available on website. | Eligibility | To be eligible for compassionate care benefits you must apply and show that: * your regular weekly earnings from work have decreased by more than 40%; and * you have accumulated 600 insured hours in the last 52 weeks or since the start of your last claim * this is called the qualifying period Refer to website for more information | |||
| Application | Applications can be made in person at local offices, completed by mail or made securely online here. Must also provide a medical certificate as proof that the gravely ill family member needs care or support and is at significant risk of death within 26 weeks. Employment documents, a medical letter and a SIN will be required as part of the application process. | |||
