Description and Service Details
Description (Service) Nile Virus and Lyme Disease are vector-borne diseases. 
 
West Nile Virus (WNV) 
* the Health Department has a comprehensive West Nile Virus control and surveillance program which runs in the spring, summer and fall months 
* this program determines the health risk of WNV for residents and visitors of Halton Region 
* West Nile virus is a virus that is found in wild birds and carried by mosquitoes  
* affects wild birds, mainly crows and Blue Jays, and can be transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito 
* there is no specific treatment and no vaccine for humans against the virus  
 
Activities include: 
* public education 
* monitoring & surveillance for the presence of the West Nile virus in mosquitoes 
* monitoring for the presence of West Nile virus in humans by ensuring prompt reporting of all cases of the disease by working with local physicians and hospitals 
* implementation of a larviciding program when necessary 
* implementation of an adulticiding program if necessary

* to report standing water on public property call the Halton Region Health Department, the toll free number or the TTY number

Lyme Disease  
* Lyme disease is a bacterial infection spread by the bite of an infected blacklegged tick  
* in Ontario, the only ticks known to carry Lyme disease are blacklegged ticks 
 
Activities include: 
* public education 
* surveillance for the presence of infected blacklegged ticks 
 
Annual tick dragging: 
* is a method of collecting ticks for the purpose of identifying risk areas where past tick surveillance indicated the potential presence of blacklegged ticks

Tick testing: 
* remove the tick as soon as possible and store the tick in a sealed dry container  
* do not squish the tick 
* submit the tick for identification and testing to the Halton Region Health Department 
* a health inspector will call you with identification results two to four weeks after your submission  
* results are used for surveillance purposes only and are not intended for clinical diagnosis 
* see your doctor or healthcare provider right away if you have been bitten by a tick or develop symptoms consistent with Lyme disease
