| Description | Concerned Friends offers advice and consultation on care issues for anyone seeking a long-term care home placement or experiencing concerns with a long term care setting (including residents and friends, or families of residents). Services include: suggesting alternatives to institutional care * assistance in submitting complaints * support when issues involve a resident's health, safety, or threat of discharge * promoting public education on the needs, rights, and responsibilities in long term care homes * advocating for constructive changes in long-term care homes and legislation * was instrumental in establishing the Family Councils concept and initiative * a Family Council is an organized, self-led, democratic group composed of family and friends of the residents of long term care facilities * Councils provide mutual support, empowerment, and advocacy to their members * are now in recognized in the new Long-Term Care Homes Act, where the rights to membership and the powers of the Family Council are now law | ||||||||
