Description (Agency) The Ministry of Children and Youth Services provides funding for child welfare, family intervention services, children's community support services, and children's mental health services.

Service Information
Description (Service) Five regional offices are responsible for the direct delivery of some ministry programs, and provide a management role for those services delivered locally by municipalities and transfer payment agencies.  
 
Child Protection  
Services provided by children's aid societies and governed by the Child and Family Services Act include:  
* investigating abuse or neglect of children  
* where necessary, taking steps to protect the children  
* caring for and supervising children who come under their care or supervision  
* counselling and support for families for the protection of children  
* preventing circumstances requiring the protection of children  
* placing children for adoption 
* providing Foster Care for children not able to live safely with parents or caregivers  
 
Best Start  
Services focus on * early learning and child care services * healthy growth and development during a child's first years * ages birth to six 
* Healthy Babies Healthy Children  
* infant hearing program  
* speech and language therapy for children who need extra help  
* services for children who are blind or have low vision  
* Ontario's Early Years initiatives build on existing partnerships, programs and services to benefit families with children aged six and younger  
 
Prevention and Early Intervention Supports 
* services for children with developmental disabilities and special needs 
* behaviour management  
* respite, out-of-home respite  
* special services at home (SSAH)  
* children's mental health  
* assistance for children with severe disabilities (ACSD)  
* residential services  
 
Program Review and Compliance  
* inspect and license all children's residential programs operating in accordance with the Child and Family Services Act  
 
Youth  
Works with community agencies, police and school boards to develop more services and programs for youth in under-serviced areas within a five-part strategy:  
* Summer Jobs for Youth Program: provides young people 15-18 years of age with summer jobs so they get real work experience  
* Youth in Policing Initiative: provides opportunities for youth to work with police departments across Ontario so they can develop skills that could lead to a possible career in policing 
* Youth Outreach Worker Program: work with hard-to-reach youth to help them get the programs and services they need  
* School-based Prevention/Diversion Program: helps high school students 16-18 years of age succeed in school and stay out of trouble  
* YouthConnect.ca for young people where they can find information about programs and resources  
 
Ontario Child Benefit  
Families with children can receive a monthly OCB payment. There is no application for the OCB. Depending on your family income, you may qualify for the Ontario Child Benefit (OCB), if you:  
* are the primary caregiver of a child under 18 
* are a resident of Ontario 
* have filed and had assessed your previous year’s income tax return, and so has your spouse or common-law partner 
* have registered your child for the federal Canada Child Tax Benefit

Special Needs  
Provides and funds many special programs and services for children, and their families, who have problems relating to their * physical health * emotional health * behaviour * development * mental health including:  
* assistance for children with severe disabilities  
* children with autism  
* children and youth with developmental disabilities  
* Behaviour Management Program  
* Infant Development Programs  
* children's rehabilitation services/children's treatment centres  
* child and youth mental health services  
* Child and Parent Resource Institute for children with complex mental health or developmental challenges  
* Infant Hearing Program  
* Preschool Speech and Language Program  
* residential services  
* respite programs  
* special services at home
