Description (Service) This topic record gives an overview of services to assist newcomers to Canada, and is an index to related records in this database. 
 
INFORMATION AND REFERRAL FOR NEWCOMERS

3. Community Information Centres throughout Halton, see here (for help in languages other than English, dial 2-1-1 to reach 211Halton, which uses this database and has live translation services in more than 150 languages) 
 
 
IMMIGRATION AND CITIZENSHIP:  
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (see website here) facilitates the arrival of immigrants, provides protection to refugees, and offers programming to help newcomers settle in Canada.  
* also grants citizenship and issues travel documents (such as passports) to Canadians 
 
Discover Canada publication, to prepare for Canadian citizenship test, is available online here, to read online, download or listen

* available to borrow at some library locations 
 
 
SETTLEMENT AND INTEGRATION SERVICES: 
Free services for newcomers to Canada are funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada to provide advice and help on: 
* Looking for a job 
* Getting a language assessment 
* Registering for language classes 
* Finding a place to live 
* Filling out forms and applications 
* Signing up children for school 
* Learning about community services 
 
Available in Burlington, Oakville, Milton and surrounding areas

INTERPRETATION AND TRANSLATION:

HEALTH INSURANCE: (more information also available from Settlement and Integration services, above) 
1. Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) 
Provides publicly-funded health care for residents of Ontario 
* apply at ServiceOntario Service Counter, for details see full records here  
* 3-month waiting period (for exceptions see here)  
* Newcomers are advised to take out private health insurance to cover any medical expenses that may arise during waiting period  
 
2. Interim Federal Health Program 
Provides limited, temporary coverage of health-care benefits to people in the following groups who aren’t eligible for provincial or territorial (PT) health insurance: 
* protected persons, including resettled refugees 
* refugee claimants 
* certain other groups

DRIVER'S LICENCE:  
A newcomer to Ontario who holds any type of driver’s licence from another province or country must apply for an Ontario driver’s licence within 60 days of moving to the province
