Description (Service) Unclaimed balances in Canadian financial institutions are turned over to the Bank of Canada, the country's national bank, to act as custodian. 
* an “unclaimed balance” is a Canadian-dollar deposit or negotiable instrument issued or held by a federally regulated bank or trust company that has been transferred to the Bank of Canada after it has been inactive for a period of ten years 
Types of balances can be: 
* current/chequing accounts * savings accounts * credit card balances * term deposits * Guaranteed Investment Certificates (GICs) * depository receipts * bank drafts * certified cheques * money orders * official cheques * traveller's cheques 
* amounts under $1000 are held for 30 years 
* amounts of $1000 and over are held for 100 years  
* if the balance remains unclaimed at the end of the prescribed custody period the Bank of Canada transfers the funds to the Receiver General for Canada
