DescriptionOntario's mandatory vehicle emissions inspection and maintenance program improves health and environment by reducing smog-causing pollutants through testing and repairing vehicle emissions systems.
Under Drive Clean, your vehicle may need an emissions test to renew your registration and licence plates (rules vary by type of vehicle) * emissions test is required when buying or selling used vehicles with a model year older than the current calendar year, with some exceptions for special circumstances
To find out if your vehicle needs a test, do one of the following:
1) Use online search form
2) Check vehicle licence renewal application sent by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation about three months before vehicle’s registration is due to expire, which should show any vehicles requiring test
3) Call the Drive Clean Contact Centre at number above
To find an authorized test facility

Computerized Emissions Test, Test-Ready and 'Not Ready'
As of Jan 1, 2013, a computerized test reads car’s history using the vehicle's on-board diagnostics
Recent repair or battery disconnection may result in the monitors being unable to read the vehicle's computer, indicating 'not ready' (details) * on an interim basis, vehicles experiencing two or more 'not ready' readings may be eligible for a Readiness Conditional Pass * How to ensure your vehicle is 'test-ready'
Smoking vehicles can be reported online or by phoning the Drive Clean Contact Centre at number above
