Description (Service) Ontario's mandatory vehicle emissions inspection and maintenance program improves health and environment by reducing smog-causing pollutants through testing and repairing vehicle emissions systems. 
* a vehicle may need an emissions test to renew your registration and licence plates (rules vary by type of vehicle)  
* emissions test is required when buying or selling used vehicles with a model year older than the current calendar year with some exceptions 
To find out if a vehicle needs a test: 
* use the online search form 
* check vehicle licence renewal application sent by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation about three months before vehicle’s registration is due to expire, which should show any vehicles requiring test  
* call the Drive Clean Contact Centre  
* search online or call Drive Clean Contact Centre to find an authorized test facility 
* smoking vehicles can be reported online or by phoning the Drive Clean Contact Centre
