DescriptionThe CMHC is the Government of Canada's national housing agency, helping Canadians gain access to a wide choice of quality, affordable homes. It administers the National Housing Act (NHA) whose purpose is to promote construction of new houses, repair and modernize existing homes and improve housing and living conditions. 
 
CMHC'S mortgage loan insurance reduces the size of a downpayment needed to buy a home.  
 
Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program (RRAP) and Related Programs: 
* Homeowner RRAP provides financial assistance to low-income homeowners so that they could bring their properties up to minimum health and safety levels; 
* RRAP On-Reserve provides assistance to low-income homeowners on Indian Reserves to bring their properties up to minimum health and safety levels; 
* RRAP for Persons with Disabilities provides assistance to homeowners and landlords to undertake accessibility work to modify dwellings occupied or intended for occupancy by low-income persons with disabilities; 
* Rental RRAP provides assistance to landlords of affordable housing to pay for mandatory repairs to self-contained rental units to be occupied by tenants with low incomes; 
* Rooming House RRAP provides assistance to owners of rooming houses to pay for mandatory repairs to housing intended for accommodation at rents which are affordable to low-income individuals; 
* RRAP for Non-Residential Conversion provides assistance to convert non-residential properties into affordable self-contained rental housing units or bed units; 
* The Emergency Repair Program (ERP) provides assistance to low-income homeowners in rural and remote areas to make emergency repairs required for the continued safe occupancy of their houses; 
* Secondary/Garden Suites assists in the creation of affordable housing for low income seniors and adults with disabilities by providing financial assistance to convert/develop existing residential properties that can reasonably accommodate a secondary self-contained legal unit; 
* Home Adaptation for Senior Independence Program (HASI) assists low-income elderly Canadians whose difficulties in daily living can be addressed by certain adaptations to their homes.
