Description (Service) Works impartially to prevent violations of people's fundamental civil and political human rights by governments and opposition groups by participating in various campaigning and fundraising activities:  
* carries out letter writing programs, shows films and holds conferences that educate people about human rights issues  
* annual fundraising dinner each June 
 
Of special interest to the Burlington Amnesty group are: 
* the human rights situation in Colombia  
* rights of indigenous people in Canada (with a focus on the Amnesty Stolen Sisters campaign)  
* human rights abuses being committed by the People's Republic of China (including in Tibet)  
* actively campaigning for the release of Mr. Huseyin Celil, a Canadian citizen and Burlington resident, who has been sentenced to life in prison in China
